Hall is a Progressive Web App from day one. Frontline workers install it from their browser in three taps, use it offline, and never deal with an app store, a missed update, or a corporate MDM configuration.
Why PWA
The app-store tax doesn’t help anyone
Native apps cost real money, developer licences, review queues, version fragmentation, MDM profiles, platform review boards. On shop-floor devices none of that translates to learner benefit. PWA is a more honest default.
Full offline capability
Course content cached on WiFi; progress saved in IndexedDB. Run a 20-minute compliance module on a 2G signal or no signal at all. Results sync automatically when connection returns.
Connection-aware content
4G streams full-quality video. 3G drops to 360p. 2G serves audio-only narration. Offline serves pre-cached content. Automatic, no setting, no user action.
Per-tenant manifest
Dynamic manifest.json, your org’s name, logo, icon, and colours. The PWA on a learner’s phone says “[Your Company] Academy,” not ColPort.

Vertical video support
Content shot and viewed in portrait orientation. No forced landscape rotation, no letterboxed 16:9 on a 6:1 phone screen.
Read-aloud on all text
Text-to-speech button on every text block. Same synthesis engine as Mill. Useful for learners with reading difficulties, sight impairment, or English as a second language.
Voice input for answers
Assessment answers dictated via microphone. Whisper transcription. Faster on a 5.5" phone in gloves than a touch keyboard.
QR codes on equipment
Scan the QR on a forklift → the forklift safety procedure opens. Scan the QR on a kitchen fryer → the HACCP procedure opens. No login needed on device. Attribution happens via short-lived token.
SMS-first alternative
For learners who never want a persistent app
Some frontline workers never install anything on their phone; they don’t want apps following them around. Hall’s SMS tokenised learning serves them: a one-time SMS link opens the player, progress is tracked for the session only, certificate is issued, and nothing persists on-device. What works on what
Android
Any Chrome or Edge on Android 9+ (Pie, 2018). Screen 4.7"+. 2GB RAM sufficient. Graceful degradation for older devices.
iOS
Safari on iOS 15+. Add to Home Screen prompt + PWA behaviours all supported. Push notifications via the Web Push API (iOS 16.4+).
Shared devices
Kiosk mode on Enterprise, learner signs in with employee PIN, uses the device, signs out. No residual data on the device between sessions.
Device security
No phone root / jailbreak detection, we assume devices are untrusted. All sensitive operations re-verify on server. Phone numbers AES-256 encrypted at rest; device identifiers never stored as durable fingerprints.
